I love this stuff! Sweet at first, then sour. You have to like sour stuff. This is a dried fruit coated in sugar. It's naturally tart and delicious.

If you have an acquired taste for tamarind, this is a great snack. Tamarind candy tends to lose flavor and freshness within a few months after shipment, and this is a new arrival so buy now--quality is great.

Star anise - 3.5 oz Review

Star anise - 3.5 oz

I needed a small amount of Star Anise for one recipe. My friend said I wouldn't be able to find it in a normal grocery store. He knows a lot about the food world so I didn't even bother looking.Amazon, of course, came through as always. The stuff is great, and the recipe came out perfectly.

I guess I misjudged how huge a 3.5 bag of star anise would be.There is no indication of the size of the bag (9" X 5") or the number of cups that the bag holds, which I didn't measure, but which is much bigger than I thought it would be or what I needed. (Most recipes call for anywhere between half a teaspoon to a couple stars). Now I have a lot left over, and had to look for recipes to use it up.Not a big deal, and it is a fun, exotic flavor adventure, but I will be happy when the bag is finished.I went to ShopRite a few weeks ago any saw a tiny bag of star anise, with exactly as much as I needed, for 99 cents.Oh well.

If you love it, and use A LOT of it to cook with, then this is perfect.I will probably cook with it again since I now know how, but I will opt for the smaller, ShopRite bag each time. It's just not something I use often enough to need a bag this big.

Product Description:
Certain Thai curry pastes and soups that use star anise, and authentic Thai ice tea uses this as a flavorant. This is a classic Chinese spice that, in Thai dishes, is added primarily to soups. For the soup, add the whole seed pod instead of grinding it up. The anise should not be eaten whole, but it looks pretty in the dish and imparts are wonderful aroma. Star Anise is also used very effectively in making aromatic pot pourri, and many international dishes call for it. We offer a fresh, highly aromatic product that can be found in specialist spice stores for $7.50 per quarter ounce! We feel this is a great price, and the quality is excellent. Product of Thailand. Anise is one of the key ingredients in Chinese 5 Spice. We also offer star anise powder.
