Natural Value Organic Red Grapefruit Segments In Organic Juice, 15-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12) Review

Natural Value Organic Red Grapefruit Segments In Organic Juice, 15-Ounce Cans

These grapefruit segments are made in Israel.NATURAL VALUE seems to process food s made from many different countries -- their Chunk Yellowfin Tuna In Spring Water is a Product of Thailand. One can thus imagine taking a mini, arm-chair "culinary tour of the world", with "Natural Value" products! The company headquarters, however, is in Sacramento, California, USA, which is re-assuring to those who like to buy products made and/or processed in that country!

The ingredient stated on the can is: "Organic Red Grapefruit in Organic Juice."My supermarket, (non-organic), brand lists "Grapefuit Slices in light syrup" as its ingredients. I tended to find (a bit more than slightly) more grapefuit, and less liquid, in the supermarket brand. And I found these organic grapefruit sections to be a bit tarter than the supermarket brand.(Neither one contains sugar). As well, the slices tended to be firmer, and more whole slices, (not pieces of slicss), were found in the supermarket brand. Of course, the supermarket brand, as I have stated, is NOT organic -- whilst the Natural Value brand, here being reviewed, IS organic.I DO wish that government requirements included the statement of "Net DRAINED Weight", instead of the prsent "Net Weight".With only the Net Weight required, the ingredients inside could, (though they don't yet), contain 51% grapefruit, and 49% water -- and could STILL, legally, list "Grapefruit" as the first ingredient! For the present, sadly, the situation remains, like the saying goes: "You pays your money and you take your chances." (And shake that un-opened can, to get an at least approximate idea of the amount of liquid!) inside....

I don't have a can of the supermarket brand handy right now to compare...but the Natural Value Organic Red Grapefruit slices come in a can with top and bottom lined in what seems to be white enamel. This is good, as it further protects the product from spoilage. However, the main part of the can, between the two ends, is NOT so protected. Not only that -- it is a STEEL can, and so has a SEAM, (unprotected), going down one part of the can.
So, the grapefruit sections will spoil faster than they would with a non-seamed can. (The yellowfin tuna can, also produced by Natural Value, has NO seam in it!)There are some "blind-dated" numbers on the top of the can, (a food industry code that is all but unreadable by non food-industry people), but, beside it, seems to be a date that I CAN decipher -- I think. It SEEMS to say: 20:9:17.Does this mean the slices inside are fresh until September 17th, 2020? For me to be ABSOLUTELY sure, the date SHOULD have read: 20:09:2017....or something similar. It's good to have some type of dating...I only wish it was more precise.

For those who are interested, these organic, red grapefruit sections from Israel are "Certified Kosher".But -- unlike the "Natural Valley Chunk Yellowfin Tuna in Spring Water", (as heretofore mentioned, a Product of Thailand) -- which boasts the trusted "OU" Kosher certification from the prestigeous Orthodox Union of America, the Kosher Cetification of these ISRAELI Organic Red Grapefruit Segments, is given ONLY by an individual rabbi's name, and the letter "K".I remember being taught in Hebrew School that just a letter of the alphabet, ("K"), is NOT a sign of Kashruth, because no one can copyright a letter of the alphabet!
One does not necessarily need the OU Certification -- although this does indicate highest quality, as it is from the ORTHODOX Union.Symbols such as the letter K with a triangle around it, a "WK", (standing, I think, for "Western Kosher"), or a "K" superimposed upon a map of the USA, also should be acceptable, because they represent ORGANIZATIONS, where, if there is a doubt, MANY people are there to judge the kosher-or-not quality of a particular food. Here, one only has ONE rabbi's name, plus the ubiquitious letter "K", standing on it's own and, according to my rabbi, meaning nothing.I suppose ONE rabbi's name next to a "K" symbol is better than just the "K" symbol alone -- but it's curious to me that the Natural Value Yellowfin Tuna, from Thailand, has the "OU" certification, whereas these grapefruit slices, (from Israel!), also canned and packaged by Natural Value, do NOT have the "OU" symbol.Well, many much stranger things have happened in the world....

It's good to keep grapefruit on hand -- it's tasty, full of vitamin C, (75% in a serving of 1/3 of the can), and slimming, (grapefruit diet, anyone?)Packed in cans, it is also very convenient, *no messy slicing or scooping!)Getting 12 cans at a time is a good way to have plenty on hand, and possibly to price-protect yourself as well. These are pretty good, pretty tasty, (and just plain pretty!) grapefruit slices. At 150 calories per can of 15 ounces, net weight, they're also the pefect snack!Despite some shortcomings, which I list above, I highly recommend them!

Newman's Own Organics California Prunes, Pitted, 6-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 12) Review

Newman's Own Organics California Prunes, Pitted, 6-Ounce Pouches

These 6 oz packs of organic California prunes have more flavor than the non-organic brands. They are also drier and firmer, which I wasn't sure I liked at first. I quickly grew used to it and now I prefer them this way. They are sweet and chewy.

The freshness date is 16 months in the future, so these would make a good addition to any emergency preparedness stock one might have.

You can't go wrong at this price for 12 bags. This is one brand you can trust

Update 10/31/10I bought some more of the prunes recently and they are not dry and firm anymore. Now they seem like they've been steamed because they are very moist and the inside of the bag has prune gunk stuck to the sides. If you stick your hand in the bag, it will come out pruned, so I use a fork. They taste fine, but I was a little taken aback when I first opened them.
